Emanuel County Institute ECI FCCLA Raises Awareness of Childhood Hunger in Their Community

October 17, 2019

Emanuel County Institute FCCLA has been hard at work raising money for Weekend Blessings, which is a program that gives bags of food to children in need every weekend and over the long breaks. Weekend Blessings was developed by FCCLA members and 3 community members. This program is funded through donations only. FCCLA members host events and food drives to help raise money and awareness of this program. FCCLA assisted with the annual Weekend Blessings 5K to raise money and it was very successful, we raised $2000.00 for the program. Recently, students and volunteers participated in “Bike Night for a Cause” which raised $300.00 for the program. Jamie O’Neal provided wonderful music for the family entertainment night. Currently, State Farm is sponsoring a canned ham food drive for our thanksgiving bags. This year Emma Mason and Taylor Flakes wanted to add care bags in addition to the food bags for our students in the community. FCCLA hosted a toiletry bag drive where community members donated bags used and new for this wonderful cause. Members have also been hosting a toiletry item drive to collect the items students may need. These items will be in a secure location at each school and students will be able to go get items that they need at school or to take home. ECI FCCLA members have been really busy this year trying to raise awareness and funds for this much needed program. Crider Foods donated $1863.00 to Weekend Blessings this year after being educated by FCCLA members about the program. We are very appreciative of all the support our community has shown to ECI FCCLA and the Weekend Blessings program.
